Mothers Day Session + Poses

With Mothers Day just around the corner I wanted to share some of my favorite sessions and some poses that are my go to for family sessions with mom! There are so many options, especially with multiple children at different ages. I will share larger families next!

First, family sessions can be hard. Mom is typically the last one ready. She’s running around days prior (sometimes the night before if you are like me)! picking out coordinating outfits and making sure the siblings don’t scratch the others face in the days leading up to the session. Its so important to me to be a calm force when I show up with my families. I KNOW the chaos that has ensued and the bribes that have been made so the next hour goes semi- smooth at the very least! Hey, I’m a mom too.

Lets take a look at some photos with posing for your next family session!

With this set you’ll see a variety of poses, but in one position you can get multiple photos. The goal for is to not move the clients too many times. I aim for standing, sitting and movement photos in a session. In the studio we don’t get as much movement (walking or spinning around) but you will notice in the photos above that I make small adjustments in the same pose, typically with their head.

Photo 1 - I have her nestling up against babies temple, then I tell her to look at me and smile. Two photos in one pose

2. standing, I have dad looking at baby then mom at the camera. After this I told them to switch, then both to look at me, then both to look at each other. boom- 4 poses!

3. The over the shoulder photo of the baby! After this I told mom to turn her head for a temple kiss on baby - 2 poses!

4. This one I had them both looking at me, then told dad to nestle on moms temple, which made her laugh (win)!, then I had them both “admire” baby - 3 poses!

5. sitting holding baby facing camera- both engage with baby, then both look at me (picture 12) 2 poses!

6. Here I got everyone really tight and close and told dad to look at baby, mom at me. Then we switched, then they both looked at me - 3 poses!

7. Just mom here!!! Always capture the parent solo with the kids. We also had her look down at baby here - 2 poses!

8 & 9. I love these ones! You can see I had them “admire” baby, then look at each other. I then had them kiss, I changed my composition to focus on the baby and had mom and dad a softer in the background. I think I ended up with over 4 poses in this set!

10. You know this one :) I have both parents do the airplane pose and bring baby up and down for kisses and nose kisses! Between mom and dad you have 4+ poses here.

11. Both parents join on the bed! Here I had them nestle their noses, look at me and they ended up laughing so I had 3 poses here!

12. See #5!

This is all a very quick overview of what goes through my mind when posing. Remember, moving heads and hands can change a photo! You also want to make sure baby isn’t being held by one parent the entire time. Simply changing which side the baby is on can give you a new set of photos and mom can use her hands to hug on dad or interact with baby!

I hope these ideas help you during your next session as a client or photographer! I will do a post with multiple kids and a larger family soon!
