From Chaos to Calm: How to Get Great Family Photos at the Lake
Family photos are the perfect way to capture memories with loved ones. But when it comes to taking these photos at the lake, it can be a chaotic experience for everyone involved. From finding the right location and dealing with unpredictable weather, to wrangling kids and coordinating outfits, the list of potential stressors can seem endless. But don't worry, it's possible to turn this potentially stressful situation into a fun experience that results in beautiful photos. I'm here to share five key tips for getting great family photos at the lake, from location and timing to how to keep it fun and relaxed for everyone involved. Plus, I'll throw in a bonus tip to help you warm up with Starbucks cause this has happened to me more than once, which I NEVER complain about!
Communicate and Set Expectations are KING!
To capture great family photos at the lake, communication and setting expectations are crucial. You don't want to show up with a plan in mind only to realize that your clients had a completely different idea of what the day would look like. Prior to the shoot, communicate with your client about what you envision for the photoshoot and ask for their input as well. This way, everyone is on the same page and there are no surprises on the day of the shoot.
When setting expectations, it's helpful to discuss logistics such as timing, clothing, and how long the session will take. If you plan to shoot during a specific time of day, be sure to communicate this with your family. If you expect them to dress in a certain way, let them know beforehand so they have ample time to prepare. Additionally, set the expectation for how long the photo shoot will take, likely they decided which package they would like prior to planning out these details.
If you communicate and set expectations before the shoot, everyone will feel more comfortable and at ease during the session. This will result in more authentic and natural-looking photos. Once you've covered the location, timing, and expectations with your client, it's time to pack the essentials!
Pack the Essentials:
Packing the essentials for a family photo shoot is crucial to ensure everyone is prepared and comfortable. Start by bringing any necessary props or accessories such as blankets or toys for children. It's also important to pack sunscreen, bug spray, and water to keep everyone protected and hydrated. You may be thinking "why would I bring all that, shouldn't the client"? NO! As the photographer, I recommend to have a back up for your back up, especially when small kids are involved!
Keep it Fun and Relaxed:
One of the best ways to have a successful shoot is to keep things fun and relaxed. Encourage candid moments and let your clients personalities shine through. If someone is feeling nervous or uncomfortable, take a break and do something silly or fun to lighten the mood. When everyone is at ease, it will show in the photos. I come prepared with jokes and funny prompts to ask the family to help break the ice.
Go with the Flow:
Is the weather suddenly bad? (Hi, welcome to the PNW) its ok- time for plan B. Always keep clear umbrellas in your car! I found mine at Target. Need to find shelter- hi starbucks! One of my families needed shelter from the wind AND a bribe for the littles, so we hit up the coffee shop down the street. We actually got some great photos out of it and got to regroup. Always plan for hiccups, and remember that your clients will follow your lead. So don't panic - you've got this!
